I am a violinist in the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with over 30 years teaching experience, and am able to offer private violin/viola lessons for students from age 6 to adult. Enhanced CRB certificate available for inspection on request. All standards welcome from beginners to advanced and diploma level.
I have a particular interest in helping pupils who suffer pain while they are playing, and a lot of experience working with pupils who are hypermobile (which used to be called being double jointed!) This is a genetic fault in the collagen of the soft tissues all over the body and can cause repetitive strain type injuries over a period of time, particularly for string players, unless carefully managed. Having struggled with this myself, I can really understand the issues involved, and enjoy the challenge of helping students find ways of playing that will cause the least amount of pain!
My main aim is for students to develop a love of music and the violin through sound technique. Associated Board Grade examinations can be followed if appropriate, and I can offer piano accompaniment as far as Grade 6. For more advanced students, consultation lessons are available for bowing arm problems. I can also offer orchestral coaching and preparation for orchestral auditions or music college.
My fees are £35 per hour, or £25 per 30 minutes. If these fees are too high for some people, I am open to giving lessons every other week for adults or non-beginners, but children who are just starting lessons generally need the regularity of lessons once weekly in order to progress effectively. However, due to my full-time job in the CBSO, parents and pupils alike need to have a certain degree of flexibility as I cannot guarantee the same time each week!
